A 1 MW solar installation delivered in a remote Indigenous community – designed to supply 100 % of daytime demand and significantly reduce diesel dependency.

Located 230 kilometres south of Darwin, the Daly River Solar Plant Stage 2 project is part of the Solar Energy Transformation Program (SETuP), which aims to deliver 10 MW of solar capacity across 35 remote Indigenous communities. Located near Nauiyu, this project delivers solar-generated electricity directly to the community and surrounding area – off-setting fuel use, improving air quality, and enhancing energy resilience.

PHE Group was engaged by BMD Group to deliver the electrical installation of the 1MW ground-mounted solar farm connected to the Power and Water Company network.

Project Scope

  • LV power cable installation and panel equipment integration.
  • Supply and installation of the LV switchboard, PCC, marshalling boards, inverters, and isolators.
  • Testing and commissioning of all electrical systems, including fibre and Cat6 communications cabling.
  • Installation of earthing and lightning protection systems.
  • Preparation of QA documentation, construction and commissioning records, and handover deliverables, including the Operation and Maintenance Manual.

Outcomes and Benefits

  • Delivered 100% of Nauiyu’s daytime energy needs and 50% of the surrounding area's power requirement – significantly reducing diesel reliance and improving local air quality.
  • Overcame complex challenges – including rocky terrain, periodic flooding, and logistical barriers – through tailored engineering and robust site management.
  • Completed safely, on time, and on budget, showcasing PHE's capability in delivering renewable infrastructure within constrained remote settings.
