A technically complex installation forming part of the landmark Agnew Hybrid Renewable Project – Australia’s largest hybrid renewable energy microgrid and the first to utilise large-scale wind generation at a mining operation.

PHE Group was engaged to deliver the full electrical installation for the 20MW gas and diesel-fired power station forming part of the Agnew Hybrid Renewable Project – the first remote mining operation in Australia to utilise a hybrid modality, integrating gas, diesel, wind, solar, and battery storage assets. Delivered for Cummins under the broader Agnew Hybrid Renewable scope, the power station provides reliable, low-emission energy to the Gold Fields Agnew Gold Mine.

The works required careful planning and execution in a remote location, integrating with renewable generation systems and accommodating the complex logistics of transporting materials, equipment and personnel to site.

Project Scope

  • Delivered the full E&I package, including backbone and ancillary cable support systems to integrate all major plant components.
  • Completed remote radiator installation to ensure optimal generator cooling performance.
  • Delivered MV, LV, DC, control, and communications cabling to support seamless power distribution and system control.
  • Installed auxiliary transformers and 11 kV RMU systems to enhance site-wide power reliability.
  • Carried out Balance of Plant electrical works, including power to air compressors, lube oil systems, operations rooms, storage facilities, and lighting.
  • Installed hazardous area instrumentation for gas skid and generator, ensuring compliance with relevant safety standards.
  • Installed and wired UPS and protection systems to safeguard critical operations.
  • Provided QA commissioning support across both Stages 1 and 2, ensuring quality and performance benchmarks were met.

Outcomes and Benefits

  • Supported Australia’s energy transition by applying disciplined execution and practical expertise across hybrid power systems, resulting in a reliable, high-performance power station that underpins critical mining operations through more sustainable generation.
  • Delivered safely, on time, and without incidents, reinforcing PHE’s capability in executing E&I works within highly regulated, technically demanding environments.

  • Overcame logistical challenges associated with a remote WA location by carefully managing equipment, materials, and personnel, particularly when working in and around high-risk generation infrastructure.
  • Early planning de-risked interface works, staged electrical systems to align with commissioning, and enabled other contractors to progress safely and efficiently.
  • Client re-engagement to install an additional generator reflected confidence in PHE’s delivery and the performance of the project team.
