PHE Group’s successful delivery of consecutive compression upgrades at Fairview 4 and Fairview 5 played a key role in unlocking system efficiency across Santos’ Surat Basin network.

The Fairview 4 NSU-3 and Fairview 5 NSU-5 Upgrades form part of Santos’ broader strategy to enhance upstream gas compression and improve long-term production efficiency across the Surat Basin. Located at separate hubs, each upgrade plays a critical role in sustaining pressure and flow through the GLNG export pipeline.

PHE delivered the full electrical and instrumentation (E&I) scope for both projects under separate contracts. NSU-3 was successfully completed in 2024; NSU-5 commenced in 2025 as a follow-on engagement. Both works were delivered in brownfield environments with live infrastructure, staged shutdowns, and strict compliance requirements.

Project Scope

  • Delivered the full E&I scope across two nodal speed-up upgrades at Fairview Hubs 4 (NSU-3) and 5 (NSU-5).
  • Completed early works including switchroom installation, cable ladder systems, and bulk cabling in preparation for shutdowns.
  • Managed live, high-risk brownfield works during staged shutdowns – ensuring uninterrupted production throughout.
  • Installed new motor control centres (MCCs) and variable speed drives (VSDs) to support improved compressor performance.
  • Delivered specialised HV works across NSU-3 and NSU-5, including HV cable terminating, testing and commissioning, and high-voltage motor testing (step IR, partial discharge, and tan delta). At NSU-5, this also included secondary relay protection testing.
  • Glanded, terminated, and tested process instrumentation across multiple changeovers.
  • Delivered all LV power and control systems, including hazardous area inspections and compliance documentation.
  • Worked within Santos’ strict permit-to-work system, with each shutdown sequence tightly planned and executed.

Innovations and Solutions

  • Applied proven sequencing strategies developed on NSU-3 to streamline planning and delivery on NSU-5.
  • Leveraged hazardous area expertise to deliver compliant installations under compressed timelines.
  • Adopted the client’s smart completions system to track sub-system readiness and enhance QA visibility in real time.
  • Used structured collaboration across trades and commissioning teams to optimise testing and handover flow.

Outcomes and Benefits

  • Delivered two high-risk compression upgrades in live brownfield environments with zero safety incidents, maintaining full production continuity for Santos.
  • Supported project continuity by retaining key personnel between NSU-3 and NSU-5 – preserving site knowledge and client alignment.
  • Cemented PHE Group’s role as a strategic partner for hazardous area E&I works within the GLNG supply chain – trusted to manage risk, interface effectively, and deliver without disruption.
