Enabling increased gas throughput at a critical east coast supply node – safely delivered in a live brownfield environment.

Senex Energy’s $1 billion expansion of its Atlas and Roma North gas developments will deliver 60 petajoules annually to the east coast gas market – more than 10% of Australia’s domestic needs. The Atlas East Compression Facility Phase A & B was central to this uplift, increasing throughput capacity and ensuring long-term supply security.

PHE Group delivered the electrical and instrumentation (E&I) works for both Phase A and Phase B. Phase B involved augmenting the existing infrastructure installed during Phase A to accommodate higher flow rates and broader network integration. The project took place in a live operating environment, requiring shutdown coordination, interface control, and careful sequencing around active infrastructure.

Project Scope

  • Conducted HV works including auxiliary transformer testing, HV switchboard testing, and full HV cable termination, testing, and commissioning to support the site’s dual-phase compression strategy.
  • Installed switchrooms, distribution panels, and junction boxes, integrated into the evolving site layout.
  • Delivered cable ladder systems and equipment earthing to support system continuity between phases.
  • Completed instrumentation wiring, glanding, and tubing for flow, pressure, and temperature transmitters.
  • Performed hazardous area installations and inspections in accordance with EEHA standards, including compliance documentation.
  • Supported pre-commissioning and testing for both phases, including redline mark-ups and structured handover deliverables.
  • Coordinated works in active plant areas, with sequencing adapted to suit live operating conditions and shifting delivery priorities.

Outcomes and Benefits

  • Maintained strong safety performance across 32,000+ hours, with no recordable incidents.
  • Reinforced PHE Group’s position as a trusted E&I partner in Queensland’s upstream gas sector.
  • Supported energy transition by helping reduce reliance on coal-fired generation through stable, dispatchable gas infrastructure.
